What Do Windows & Doors with an Energy Star Certification Mean?

We’ve all seen products with the Energy Star logo on them. While it’s commonly known that these products are a more energy efficient option for the home, what do windows and doors with an Energy Star certification really mean?

What Makes Windows and Doors Energy Star Certified?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created the Energy Star certification to differentiate products that meet government guidelines for energy efficiency.

Window and door products with an Energy Star certification are better for the environment, save money each year and keep your home at a more comfortable temperature.

In order for windows, doors and skylights to be Energy Star certified they must be:

  1. Manufactured by an ENERGY STAR partner
  2. Independently tested, certified, and verified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), and
  3. Have NFRC ratings that meet strict energy efficiency guidelinesset by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Compared to non-certified Energy Star products, Energy Star certified windows and doors decrease energy bills by an average of 12 percent nationwide.

Installing Energy Star windows, doors and skylights saves an average of $101–$583 for households each year when replacing single-pane windows, which is equivalent to 51 to 317 gallons of gasoline. It also saves an average of $27–$197 a year when replacing double-pane or clear glass windows, which is equivalent to 13 to 102 gallons of gasoline.

National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) Ratings

A voluntary program called the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) has established another, more in-depth rating for your energy efficient windows and doors.

While the Energy Star label tells you whether or not your window and doors meet energy efficiency standards, NFRC labels alert consumers to the energy performance ratings in multiple categories for each window, door and skylight. This helps consumers compare energy efficient products by breaking down their performance in order to buy the products that best suit their needs.

Why Energy Star Certified Products Matter

Buying Energy Star certified windows and doors contributes to a more sustainable future. Shrinking your carbon footprint helps reduce environmental degradation. When replacing your windows and doors, look for the Energy Star label to do your part for a green environment.
