Tremco Spectrem 2 - High-Performance Sealant
What You Need to Know When Using Tremco Spectrem 2
UL registered, GreenGuard Certified and SWR validated, Tremco Spectrem 2 is a high-performance, medium modulus silicone sealant ideal for a variety of construction and repair jobs. These include two-sided structural glazing, perimeters, weather seals, curtainwall and window joints, cap beads, and heel/toe beads. It can be used on metal, aluminum, glass, steel, brick, concrete, stone and painted metal (even without primer in many instances). And because it’s tack-free in 20-40 minutes, you have 10 – 15 minutes for tooling, so Spectrem 2 is quick and easy to work with. (It is fully cured in 14 to 21 days.)
Before Using Spectrem 2 from Tremco
Tremco’s Spectrem 2 Silicone Sealant comes in 11 different colours and five different sizes (300 ml cartridges, 600 ml sausages, 7.6 L or 2-gallon pails, 17 L or 4.5 gallon pails and 55 gallon or 208.2 L drums), so you’re sure to find the right Spectrem 2 for your next project. And it doesn’t require much in terms of surface prep either. First, install closed cell polyethylene backer rods or adhesive-backed polyethylene tape to back the joint. This will allow you to control the depth of the bead, but it will also avoid the headache of having the sealant adhere to the back of the joint.
Once the joint backing has dried. Inspect the surfaces to ensure everything is flush and solid. Then, use a wire brush, grinder, sandblasting equipment or solvent to remove any dirt, dust, debris or contamination. The surface should also be solid and free of any kind of moisture. Then, you’re ready to apply Tremco Spectrem 2.
Applying Tremco’s Spectrem 2
Tremco Spectrem 2 Silicone Sealant works with standard caulking equipment on surfaces with a temperature of at least 5 degrees Celsius. The joints should be at least 1/4″ wide, however. To determine the bead depth, measure the width of the joint. Those wider than 1/2″ wide should have a bead depth equal to half the width. Joints ranging in size from 1/4″ to 1/2″ should have a bead depth equal to its width.
Most professionals love that there are no special steps or technical skills to learn to get a good seal with Spectrem 2. Simply apply the bead and use a dry tool to work it into the joint and get good adhesion. You can then clean up any excess silicone and any tools you used with a little solvent such as xylene, toluene or MEK. Just be sure to clean it up before it has a chance to cure. Otherwise, it may take a bit of elbow grease and a bit of careful tool handling to get the job done.
Spectrem 2 from Tremco should never be used on a damp or contaminated surface. It is also not meant for structural glazing applications or areas that will be constantly immersed in water. However, it does make quick work of many other joints including window and door perimeters. Just be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and use the proper safety equipment.
